Kevin Cole - Volunteer

Kevin Cole. Kevin Cole

Born 1961. Kevin started in 1979, broadcasting twice a week. Kevin is a regular site around the hospital collecting requests for his shows. Kevin is a keen country music fanatic and is regarded within BHB as the King of Country. Kevin has a remarkable memory and could quite easily replace the record library system.

Kevin's taste in music is wide and varied but his main passion is for country music. Kevin is a lover of all country music from the modern offerings right back to the country classics. Kevin is also a soul, disco and tamla mowtown lover and every now and again is caught listening to a love song or two.

Kevin or "Kev" to his friends joined hospital radio in 1979, he saw an article in the local press and decided hospital radio was just the thing to keep him off the streets. Not long after putting pen to paper Kevin was invited in to look around the station and soon found himself on air with his own show in September of 1979.

29 years on we still can't get rid of him.

Richard Ward - Volunteer

Richard Ward Richard Ward

Richard became involved with BHB in 1998, his previous experience including DJ at Sands Disco, Jersey as well as various appearances around the Leeds area during his college years.

A qualified chef, Richard gave up the lure of the kitchen in both commercial and industrial units around South Yorkshire for the more front of house work commencing as Bars Manager in the Cutlers Hall, Sheffield before moving to Keresforth Hall, Barnsley as Assistant Manager.

Following this he moved down to London to run the first and second to open Harvester Steak Houses in Morden and Dulwich. Being born and bred in Barnsley, he was to return home to his roots in the early 80’s taking up a post with BMBC as a catering instructor for YTS and then with the HCTC in Sheffield.

Again in the late 80’s Richard moved back to the pub trade with the job of Catering Manager for S H Wards’, Sheffield Brewery – the name is purely coincidental – and then to Area Manager looking after a number of catering outlets in Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Lincs.

A succession of take-overs brings us almost up to date with Richard working until recently as Recruitment Manager for Punch, the largest pub retailer in Great Britain.

Richard now runs his own sucessful Handyman/Gardening business in Barnsley.

Over the years Richard has kept himself in tip top condition by playing football for Ward Green (25yrs) winning most of the accolades available in non league and having the opportunity to play at both Oakwell and Bramall Lane in cup finals. He still found time to fit in Skiing visits to Switzerland and Italy picking up his Silver Medal accreditation on the way.

As well as putting in time with BHB Richard also puts in time with MIND in Barnsley as a volunteer support worker at the evening drop-in sessions.

Keith Borrott - Volunteer

Keith Borrott Keith Borrott at Oakwell

For over 20 years he was the Public Address Operator at Barnsley F.C   known as the voice of Oakwell Keith combined this duty with match day commentary for Hospital Radio. Now in his 30th something year of Hospital Radio Keith is as enthusiastic as he was on the occasion of his first match commentary. These days the nerves do not have the same effect as they did on that occasion .

Amongst many  commentary highlights are being a member of the commentary team on the occasion of promotion to the premiership and the first goal against West Ham in the  opening game of the following season. Ever the optimist Keith believes that the beginning of each new season heralds the dawn of greatness for the Super Reds as he says  " Hope Springs Eternal "
