Martin Sugden - Station Manager

Martin SugdenMartin Sugden

Martin Sugden started his radio broadcasting career with Hospital Radio back in 1986. Part of this work involved collecting and choosing the weekly music from local record shops.

In the early 90’s Martin was promoted to the position of Station Manager, training young people in broadcasting skills and request collecting from the hospital patients.

In 1995 he was an integral part of a small team that negotiated the relocation of the station into the hospital grounds from the centre of town. Raising money to build new studios was the biggest challenge for the team and later that year they began broadcasting to the 1,000 patients in the hospital.

Martin worked for a brief spell at Radio Aire helping out the evening show. During the World student games Martin was one of the media managers at the Sheffield Arena dealing with journalists from all over the world.

Martin has considerable experience in delivering training in radio skills and many of the trainees have gone on to work for the BBC and Commercial stations, one former trainee is now a Sony award winner.

He helped to set-up and run several temporary FM broadcasts celebrating National Hospital Broadcasting week, which has been a very valuable experience for Martin. Martin has also worked for Select FM during their application for a commercial licence in the local area.
