About Barnsley Hospital Broadcasting

Barnsley Hospital Broadcasting in its current format was founded in November of 1995 after 10 Months of negotiations with the hospital and its trust board.

There has been however a hospital radio service to the Barnsley District Hospitals in some form or other for over 54 years. Initially starting as a football commentary service for the 1953/1954 football season, the station has developed into a state of the art radio station, who's resources and equipment outstrip some small commercial stations.

In 1995 BHB were the first occupants of Block 1, to be renamed Beckett House, later the personnel department were to follow. Initially the equipment was sparse, but we started of as we meant to go on with professional broadcast equipment.

Over the years BHB has become more well known in the hospital, partly due to being relocated on site and mostly to do with the efforts of the volunteers, request collecting and networking with the patients and staff.

BHB have had many articles in the BDi the internal hospital newsletter, posters on the wards, displays in reception and in the Main library in town. The local press are also hospital radio friendly and often publish our press releases, infact the Barnsley Chronicle sponsor our programmes.

BHB is very well equiped and has 2 studio facilities, outside broadcast equipment and football commentary facilties for both Home & away.

Studio One is based around an Alice Air2000 mixing desk, Myriad V3 Broadcast PC's, AT4033 Microphones and other ancillary broadcast equipment including a Technics SL1210 turntable for some of our older requests on vinyl, Beyer DT100 Headphones and a Shure SM58 for the guest mic make up the bulk of Studio One.

Studio Two is a smaller set up, the equipment is based around an Airmate mixer, 2 Sony CD Players, 2 Sony Minidisc players, AT 4033 Mic, DT100's again and Myriad playout system.

Both studio's have Mic Live and Phone light, all lights are in the standard canford audio covers. Other ancillary equipment include a PC for Cool Edit and a further one for the record library Database.

We also have a Sony portable Minidisc for those on the ward or in a field moments when 40ft of cable just wont do.
